In 1872 on the plains of Montana, a nine-year old Lakota boy named Black Elk embarked on a journey to the spirit world where six old men, recognized as the powers of the world, showed him four ascents described as generations and revealed to him the fate of humanity. People around the world have wondered what dancing horses are all about. What is the blue man, and why is he blue? Why did spirits use the term ascents rather than generations? Why did butterflies of every color swarm around Black Elk? Mystic Visions: Black Elk’s Great Vision Clarified answers these questions and more and unlocks the message of Black Elk’s great vision of the sacred hoop and flowering tree. Join author Quentin H. Young on his personal journey to the Red Road and to enlightenment. Young shares his revelations about Black Elk’s visions and the impact they have on our world in this illuminating narrative that feels like a night around a campfire with an old friend.

About the Author:
Quentin H Young was born to Rose Mary Likens Young and Mayo Beckford Young. His mother’s side of the family has Lakota (Sioux) Sicangu (Brule) lineage; his father’s side is Welsh. His mother’s grandmother was Eliza Kathrine Milton, a full blood Sicangu Lakota borne in 1854 in Nebraska. In 1855, a soldier took Eliza from the battlefield of the Blue Water Fight and gave her to the Miltons of Missouri to raise. Quentin has been involved in the Lakota spiritual way of life since 1950 at age 6, and, by 1989, he began keeping a canupa (pipe). He has participated in all of the seven rites of the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) ceremonies. Since 1990, he has studied Nicholas Black Elk’s Great Vision of the nation’s hoop and the flowering tree. From 1998 through 2004, he lectured at the College of DuPage, Illinois, presenting a study of Black Elk’s Great Vision through a three-hour accredited course in Social Science called Native Americans and their Mystic Visions. He has also lectured at several colleges and universities throughout Illinois with respect to Black Elk’s vision and the Lakota spiritual way of life. Quentin served as paratrooper in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne from 1962 through 1965, and retired as a design engineer after 30 years. During this period, he designed and developed a complete set of prison locking devices for three corporations within the United States. Today, many of his lock designs are in use throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Quentin lives in Illinois with his wife, Ginger, he has two grown children and two grandchildren and Sapa, his black cat who sat on the desk the whole time watching him write this book.
Review:

Quentin H. Young has helped put the breath of life into the vision of the great holy man Black Elk. I do believe Black Elk's spirit must have given him guidance and inspiration. I only hope the reader will be touched by this knowledge and understanding of how we can all, together, dance under the great Tree of Life as one people within the sacred hoop. Then, the vision of Black Elk would come as a beautiful sunrise and bring a new re-creation to humanity. Thank you, my friend. We are all related.

Chief Steve McCullough, Salt-Creek Sun Dance.

Quentin H. Young has accomplished for me what no other author has ever been able to do. For the first time in my many attempts to understand Black Elk's vision, I have an understanding thanks to Young's breakdown of the vision. Paragraph by paragraph the vision is broken down into understandable bits, like devouring a great lunch one morsel at a time. Added to the information are the tidbits from Young's own life and visions, making it a personal story as well as a story that history is still searching answers for. Young's great descriptive phrasing of his visions took me with him, giving answers about why one Sun Dances or seeks a vision quest. Not a holy book, but a human book, making sense and explaining many Lakota terms and customs I never had the privilege of knowing. An exciting read, full of humor, spirit and the interpretation of a knowledgeable man willing to share his own visions as well as that of Black Elk. This book is for those who wish to understand Black Elk's Great Vision, the spirituality behind it, and an insight as to why modern man still seeks visions, and where these visions may take him or her.
