Renowned around the country and revered within the Los Angeles environmental community, the Gottlieb Native Garden is a National Wildlife Federation-certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat. It is brimming with nature yet located less than a mile from the busy streets of Beverly Hills. Susan Gottlieb, the dedicated environmentalist who created the garden believes we could save the world if we all understood the power of native plants. This book is her story, as well as a larger one: the story of how to restore natural habitat and protect biodiversity with simple, individual actions.

With its abundant trees and flowers, dozens of birds and thousands of insects and arachnids, the Gottlieb Native Garden plays host to wildlife in all its beauty, at the grandest and tiniest of scales. It provides an example of what every one of us can accomplish by prioritizing nature. Through its photographs and its words, The Gottlieb Native Garden: A California Love Story captures the essence of this stunning space and reveals the fundamental importance of Susan Gottlieb's mission to restore native plants all over southern California.

Susan Lenman Gottlieb is an environmentalist and philanthropist with a passion for native plants and wildlife. Originally from a small mining town in Canada, Susan graduated from the Mack Training School for Nurses in Ontario before working as a nurse for many years in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In 1990, she turned her focus towards creating the renowned Gottlieb Native Garden, which is now a National Wildlife Federation-certified Backyard Wildlife Habitat and a Xerces Society-designated Pollinator Habitat. Susan is on the President s Advisory Council for National Wildlife Federation and the Board of Directors of Friends of Ballona Wetlands, as well as Audubon California. In 2008, she and her husband Dan started The G2 Gallery, a nature and wildlife photography gallery in Venice, California that donates all proceeds of art sales to environmental causes. Susan s many interests include birding, photography, hiking, belly dancing, entertaining, traveling, and spending time in her garden.

Review:
Susan's garden is an amazing laboratory of discovery. I find it difficult to walk more than a few steps without wanting to study a plant, flower, frog, bird or insect I see or hear. --Garry George, Audubon California

Susan Gottlieb's bold transformation of her garden into a stunning urban oasis for native plants and animals inspires each of us to rewild our own cities, no matter our scale or budget. --Kitty Connolly, The Theodore Payne Foundation For Wild Flowers and Native Plants

Susan and Dan Gottlieb see their garden as a public resource, an al fresco classroom where visitors can learn about the myriad benefits - minimal irrigation, low maintenance, freedom from pesticides, creation of wildlife habitat - of going native. --Martha Groves
