On the morning of November 4, 1966, the waters of the River Arno, swollen by week-long rains, burst over the embankments. Like a tidal wave, the oily, muddy river hurled itself at cars and bridges and building. Entire streets became rivers. People retreated to the upper floors of the buildings, watching in horror as the flood swept on, carrying with it automobiles, tires, window frames, heavy doors, household goods of all kinds, and the bodies of drowned animals.
