Bidisha achieved a certain notoriety in her native England when she signed a lucrative book deal at age 16 for publication of her first novel, Seahorses, which reportedly appeared to wide critical acclaim. Her second novel concerns a young blood, Rex, who is taken under the wing of an older protector and family friend, Marlon, and installed in a London nightclub/pub, the King of England. There he and his mates fall under the sway of the beautiful but corrupt Leo and Janine. The next thing anybody knows, bodies are being garroted, scraped, carved up, and penetrated in ways that would make Francis Bacon proud. It comes on good authority (i.e., publicists) that it's all a reworking of the Arthurian myth plunked down in contemporary London. This may not be obvious to most readers, who won't notice the author's similarity to Geoffrey of Monmouth, aside from the use of one name. If you can accept the conceit, though, it's carried off rather stylishly and may gain some interest among the art-school crowd. Others might choose to wait for the inevitable film treatment.
