The album is begun in 1835 by Marianne Metcalfe, a French woman who has just moved to Indiana with her pioneer husband. Marianne makes a habit of recording the events of their lives each Christmas in a journal, describing the struggles and joys of each year in the wilderness and recounting the family's holiday festivities through her recipes, notes, sketches, and anecdotes.
Later, the album is handed down to Marianne's daughter-in-law, Constance, who upholds the practice by writing about their life after the Civil War. The album continues for more than 150 years, as the Metcalfe women document the family's tragedies and happinesses through Prohibition and the stock market crash, the two world wars, the civil rights movement, the Kennedy assassination, and the Vietnam War. These events are reflected in the photographs, newspaper clippings, drawings, and keepsakes of each woman.
The Metcalfes form a culturally diverse family, and their holiday traditions encompass French, German, Irish, Russian, and English customs. The mix of cultural traditions and historical circumstances mark the album as one that most families can relate to in way or another. The Metcalfe Family Album is a warm tribute to home, family, and the holidays that may very well convince readers to begin their own family album. --Kris Law
