Grade 6-10-These clearly written series titles are useful as introductions to biographical history but contain no new insights. Crazy Horse, an Oglala Lakota warrior, was present at or took part in several major encounters with the U.S. Army during the 1860s and 1870s. His quiet, spiritual manner, as well as his military prowess, made him a leader among his people. Women who played vital roles in the development of the frontier are the subject in Krohn's volume. The move westward was expensive, tiring, lengthy, adventurous, dangerous, and rewarding as the author illustrates in the stories of Virginia Reed, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Annie Oakley, Margaret Tobin Brown, Calamity Jane, and Belle Starr. Both books include a few sidebars and average-quality, black-and-white photos and reproductions. Unfortunately, few captions note dates or locations.
