This collection of 65 poems includes the thoughts, pains, and hopes of high-school students and, for the first time, of some of their teachers. Mr. Henry Axhelm, math teacher whose hobby is ham radio ("It's nice to talk to people/ Who are far away") is contrasted with Mr. Joshua Cantor, who teaches physics ("I like the state I'm in/ Teaching the laws of nature/ In an ordered universe"). Glenn uses the language of each subject to illuminate the person's interior world. The wonder of this is the reality of the personalities. Bernstein's black-and-white photographic portraits capture the feelings of the poems. But, beyond the photos, the people live because of the words, words that create real thoughts of real people.
