Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near fine condition. Marc Chagall (illustrator). First edition. Folio. 222pp. Original tan cloth with blue lettering on spine, in original color illustrated, black lettering on spine, housed on brown paper-covered slipcase. Frontispiece. The George Moore translation of Daphne and Chloe reproduced in this volume has been drawn from an edition published in 1934 by the Limited Editions Club, Inc. Profusely illustrated with forty-two full page color offset reproductions of Chagall's lithographs, some double-paged. Contains list of plates. "Beginning with a pastoral story of young love, Chagall produced fifty-eight original color lithograph pages for a limited edition published in 1961 that has since become priceless. Now, for the first time, an adaptation of Chagall's magnificent illustrations to "Daphne and Chloe," printed in seven colors and integrated with the charming story, is being made available in an edition which will enable many more people to possess this masterpiece, to be enchanted by the artist's soaring color harmonies and the touching nakedness of bodies evoking the infinite softness of the air on the island of Lesbos." (preface). Dustjacket and slipcase with minor wear, else fine condition. A near fine copy but lacking the original slipcase and priced accordingly.
