In September of 1941 the U.S. Department of the Interior engaged Ansel Adams (1902 - 1984) to photograph National Parks, Indian reservations, and other locations for use as mural-sized prints for the Department's new building. These photos are held in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. Adams' famous Moonrise photo is not included; that image being taken on Nov 1, 1941, a day for which Adams did not bill the Government and was taking images for his own pleasure.
